NIGERIA TO RETAIN OFFICE AS OPEC PRESIDENT

A competent official of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation NNPC had said on thursday in Abuja that the exit of the former minister of petroleum resources Mrs. Diezani Alison Madueke had nothing to do with the status of Nigeria as the president of the OPEC.

The official who preferred anonymity said the position will be filled after the new minister of petroleum is appointed by the president. He further explained that former minister was elected at the 166th general meeting of OPEC not in her own capacity but to represent Nigeria.
Alison Madueke was elected into the office of OPEC presidency on November 27th 2014, but started functioning in that capacity in January 2015. The presidency of OPEC according to him lasts a period of one year. The president of the body is expected to preside over meetings of the conference in the course of that presidency.
